Philippine president and separatists in talks

Benigno Aquino, president of the Philippines, has met the chief of the country's main Muslim separatist rebel group to discuss ways to push the peace process forward.

The meeting late on Thursday between Aquino and Al Haj Murad Ibrahim, of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), took place in Tokyo.

"Both agreed to fast track the negotiations," Teresita Deles, the presidential peace adviser, said in a statement.

The 12,000-strong MILF - the biggest separatist group in South East Asia - has been fighting for more than three decades to carve out a separate Muslim state in the mostly Catholic country's southern island of Mindanao.

The rebellion has killed more than 150,000 people and stunted economic growth in the mineral rich but impoverished southern region.

"Both [sides] agreed that the implementation of any agreement should happen within the current administration," the government statement said, referring to Aquino's six-year term that ends in mid-2016.

Ghazali Jaafar, the MILF vice-chairman, told the AFP news agency by telephone from the southern Philippines that the Japan meeting had been a success.

"It's a fruitful meeting. The government is serious in looking for [a] genuine solution to the problem," said Jaafar, who did not travel with Ebrahim.

Large-scale fighting

Aquino's predecessor, Gloria Arroyo, failed to sign a peace deal with the MILF during the nearly ten years she was in power.

Large-scale fighting erupted in 2008 when rogue MILF commanders launched attacks in response to the Supreme Court outlawing a proposed peace deal that would have given them control over vast tracts of land.

More than 750,000 people were displaced at the height of the fighting, triggering a humanitarian crisis. About 400 civilians and fighters from both sides were also killed.

After Aquino came to power last year, peace talks resumed between the two sides in Malaysia, with the last round held in June.

The government said on Friday that the Japan meeting was the first time a Philippine president had held face-to-face talks with the MILF chairman in 14 years of on-and-off peace negotiations.

The official negotiating panels of the two sides are now expected to head back to Malaysia to continue the talks in the middle of this month, both parties said.

The MILF broke away in 1978 from the Moro National Liberation Front, which launched a bloody separatist uprising in Mindanao in 1971 before signing a peace treaty with the Philippine government in 1996.

The treaty created a limited self-rule area called the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao that has so far failed to uplift the condition of Filipino Muslims, who remain among the country's poorest.

Police convicted in post-Katrina US shootings

A US federal jury has found five New Orleans police officers guilty for their roles in the shooting deaths of two civilians that took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and a subsequent cover-up.

The Louisiana court said on Friday that four officers faced up to 25 counts each for their role in the September 4, 2005, shootings.

A fifth officer was convicted of helping the others cover-up the incident. All the officers potentially face life in prison.

"Today's verdict sends a powerful, unmistakable message," Jim Letten, the US attorney, said outside the New Orleans courthouse.

The jury's decision means the civilians' deaths were the result of police wilfully violating their civil rights, but that police did not arrive at the scene with the intent to murder the victims.

The four officers were found guilty of depriving citizens of their rights, and using firearms in the deprivation of those rights, the Associated Press news agency reported.

'A critical verdict'

They were also convicted of various charges connected with the cover-up, including conspiracy to obstruct justice and violate civil rights, and false prosecution.

The fifth officer, a retired homicide detective, was convicted on 10 counts related to the cover-up, including conspiracy, obstruction of justice, fabricating witnesses, falsifying victim statements, misleading federal investigators, and falsifying evidence.

The officers' defence attorneys argued the police were returning fire and reasonably believed their lives were in danger as they rushed to respond to another officer's distress call less than a week after Katrina struck.

The trial was a prominent test of the US justice department's effort to clean up a police department marred by a reputation for corruption and brutality.

A total of 20 current or former New Orleans police officers were charged last year in a series of federal probes.

Most of the cases centre on actions during the aftermath of the August 29, 2005, storm, which plunged the
flooded city into a state of lawlessness and desperation.

"This was a critical verdict. I cannot overstate the importance of this verdict. The power, the message it sends to the community, the healing power it has," Letten said.

NASA probe embarks on journey to Jupiter

NASA has launched an unmanned spacecraft to Jupiter to collect data on how the planets in our solar system were formed, reports the AFP news agency.

The probe, named Juno after the wife of the Roman god Jupiter, launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 12:25pm (16:25 GMT) on Friday.

The craft will travel around the sun for two years before setting course for Jupiter - which it will reach in July 2016. By the journey's end, Juno will have travelled more than 716-million kilometres.

Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun, was described by a NASA television commentator as "a planetary piece of the puzzle on the beginning of our solar system".

When Juno reaches its final destination, it will orbit at roughly 5,000km and utilise a host of instruments to learn more about the planet. NASA wants to map its magnetic field, determine how much water it contains and identify what makes up the planet's core.

"We're really looking for the recipe for planet formation," Scott Bolton, Juno's lead scientist, said.

"We're going after the ingredients of Jupiter by getting the water abundance as well as very precise measurements of the gravity field that will help us understand whether there's a core of heavy elements or a core of rocks in the middle of Jupiter."

The measurements will help scientists determine what the early solar system looked like and how Jupiter, believed to be the first planet to form, was created, reports Reuters news agency.

Juno was constructed by Lockheed Martin Astronautics on a $1.1bn budget.

Anas mengatakan bahwa tidak ada alasan baginya melakukan politik uang di kongres. Anas mengaku bahwa ia bukanlah orang yang ngotot untuk naik menjadi ketua umum partai. Namun saat itu ia diminta maju oleh golongan yang kerap disebut arus bawah.
"Saya diminta untuk maju di kongres, ada yang nyebut itu adalah arus bawah, saya tidak begitu suka dengan istilah itu tetapi prosesnya saya diminta dengan pertimbangan masa depan partai untuk maju," tambahnya.
Atas hal itu, ia menganggap sangat tidak logis jika dirinya membeli suara untuk jabatan. Anas berprinsip bahwa jabatan bukanlah sebuah kenikmatan, melainkan peran dan tanggung jawab untuk kerja keras.
Ia membenarkan bahwa anggota tim suksesnya diberikan fasilitas berupa bantuan transportasi untuk anggota tim pulang ke daerah masing-masing. Dan ia menganggap hal tersebut merupakan sebuah kewajiban.
"Masak yang berjuang bersama tidak difasilitasi dengan transportasi akomodasi, konsumsi. Dan itu bukan membeli suara," tuturnya.
Anas juga mengaku tidak terima jika uang untuk memfasilitasi anggota tim suksesnya itu dianggap Nazaruddin sebagai Politik uang.
"Itu bohong, karena saya tahu ongkos-ongkos itu iuran atau bantingan dari para anggota tim" kata Anas.
